Another Review For Peter Ames Carlin's Brian Wilson Biography

TIMES UNION "Peter Ames Carlin deconstructs the Beach Boys childlike leader in "Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall & Redemption of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson" (Rodale, $25.95), a fascinating read for fans -- whether casual or obsessed -- and musicians."

Mike Love Defends Self, Lawsuit

THE ROCK RADIO Mike Love said that "(Co-founder) Carl (Wilson) passed away so he's not in a position to do much. His heirs are participants in the company that owns the Beach Boys name and so with Carl not being there, if Al does something we feel is detrimental, then that needs to be addressed -- and I don't mind addressing it."

"I think the people around Brian have caused him to do things that he probably wasn't totally aware of... I think Brian is pretty much oblivious to a lot of things that go on. That's my assumption, anyway, and he's guileless enough to go ahead and ask me, 'We ought to get together and write.'"

"I tend to favor the idea of working with my cousin Brian, 'cause I know his musical strengths and I know what my strengths are and they happen to compliment each other extremely well. So I've always been open to doing something with Brian, and we'll just see how it goes. So if things can get resolved that need to be resolved then, I have no problem whatsoever in getting together with Brian. Just Brian. Because that's where the magic happened when he and I would sit around a piano and bang something out."

Brian Wilson Teams With Al Jardine For Concerts

BILLBOARD, ROLLING STONE

REUTERS "Brian Wilson will be joined by ex-Beach Boys bandmate Al Jardine for four complete performances of the group's landmark Pet Sounds album later this fall. The gigs are set for November 17 in Boston, November 18 in Washington, D.C., November 19 in Glenside, Pa., and November 21 in New York."

"Wilson's pairing with Jardine, their first in decades, comes a week after a California judge dismissed portions of a lawsuit against the latter by former Beach Boys bandmate Mike Love. Love had sued Jardine claiming he was the only person legally allowed to perform under the name 'Beach Boys' but Jardine had toured anyway with 'knockoff bands' using names such as 'Beach Boys Family & Friends.'"

Judge Tosses part Of Mike Love's Lawsuit

FIRST COAST NEWS "A judge has dismissed part of a $2 million lawsuit by Beach Boy Mike Love that claims ex-bandmate Al Jardine illegally used the name of the surf-music kings."

"Superior Court Judge James R. Dunn threw out claims of breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty Wednesday but gave Love's lawyer a chance to amend the case before it goes to trial Nov. 6."

"The lawsuit claims that Love, 65, is the only person legally allowed to perform under the name 'Beach Boys,' but Jardine, 64, had toured with 'knockoff bands' using names such as 'Beach Boys Family & Friends.'"

Dean Torrance Keeps The Jan & Dean Flame Burning

RECORDNET "Our show is not a concert," Dean Torrence, 66, said of his current touring outfit. "We're more of a party band, which is how we got started. It's never really changed."

"In a matter of moments, our career was over," Torrence said. "Jan was lucky to have survived, considering how badly injured he was. He went from an IQ of 175-180 to 68. He still could write music, but had aphasia which affected his motor skills, had one leg which was hard to walk on, and his right arm never came back. There were 13 years from that moment where we never performed. "

"We wanted to get girls' phone numbers," Torrence said. "We realized that if we do music, then all the chicks will hang out with us. We never thought it would be a career."

"It may have been because people within the industry felt that we didn't take it seriously," Torrence said. "We did as far as making the best records we could. But we didn't care about becoming the biggest stars in the world."

Brian Wilson To Enter UK Music Hall of Fame

BBC "Brian Wilson and his band will perform at the induction ceremony on 14 November. He has released seven solo albums but is best known for his work with the Beach Boys."

Brian Wilson Lends Voice To Hot Rod Documentary

TORONTO SUN "Ron Mann decided to make a documentary about a car culture god, the late hot-rod detailing legend Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth, Hollywood stars beat a path to his door. The movie is Tales Of The Rat Fink, narrated by John Goodman as Big Daddy. And it features a passel of names lending their voices to the characters of stylized cars, pretty much all of them available with a phonecall. Among them: Ann-Margret, Jay Leno, wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, the Smothers Brothers and the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson."
