ET "The one tragedy about the Beach Boys is the incursion of drugs," says Mike Love. "We always wanted to accentuate the positive and the result is there's harmony and positivity, which are extremely attractive ingredients when you think about it. Dissonance and negativity, although while you might have a great song, it's not going to last; people aren't going to want to hear something as much that doesn't make them feel good."

The pot, the amphetamines and the acid all had different effects. The coke and opioids another set.
History suggests that pot and mild amphetamine use probably helped the band's creativity. History shows that more uppers and hallucinogens probably contriubted mightily to an important indidividual's paranoia and delusions. And his mental illness. And the downfall of the band.
In the end, drugs did do very bad things to this band. Especially alcohol, coke and heroin. Just look at photos of Dennis in the early 80s.
