Kode9: Representing The UK Dubstep Scene

FACT MAGAZINE has a great interview with Kode9, an artist at the forefront of the UK electronic music movement called DUBSTEP- an offshoot of Garage music, dubstep is akin to instrumental Grime.

Kode9 also runs the label HYPERDUB, which is releasing his collaboration with vocalist Spaceape, called Memories of the Future. This album is likely to rank amongst the best electronic albums of 2006. Each track is like a sonic cinder, all the fat has been burned off, leaving only a shadowy dub prescence. Deep bass and all that. Great stuff.

Ruthann Friedman & Van Dyke Parks: Rare Single Re-issued

A recent CD re-issue of singer-songwriter RUTHANN FRIEDMAN'S solo album Constant Companion contains one bonus track. The bonus track, "Carry On (Glittering Dancer)," is a rare single executive produced by Van Dyke Parks, written and performed by Ms. Friedman and produced, arranged and conducted by Kirby Johnson. Accoring to the disc's liner notes, Mr. Parks and Ms. Friedman dated for a time. Ms. Friedman is best known, if at all, as the writer of the hit single "Windy," performed by the Association.

The disc is released by WATER records. Here are two reviews of the re-issue: DUSTED MAGAZINE, DETROIT METRO TIMES.

Mike Love Stays "Positive", Says Canadian Paper

JAM CANOE According to Mike Love, "I'm biased towards the original recordings and the original composition of the group. So I look askance at any other thing. Brian's been known to say the group he works with now is better than the Beach Boys, and personally I think A., that's not a good thing to say about your departed brothers and B., I don't think it's accurate. I take exception to that. So there!"
