Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Promo CD Extravaganza Vol. 10: “Love and Mercy (LP Version)"

This is the oldest promo I have; it dates from 1988 and is taken from Brian Wilson’s first, self-titled solo album.

”Love and Mercy” is a wonderful Brian Wilson solo tune.

Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Promo CD Extravaganza Vol. 9: “That Lucky Old Sun"

I first blogged about this promo here. It’s a year later and the scans are liberated. This CD-R promo came in a standard jewel case. The front of the case has a simple one-sided card with a miniature replica of the official album artwork printed on a white background. The tray card has a promotional blurb and the disc has basic printing.

There have been many blogs on UNCANNY that cover “TLOS” pretty well. “TLOS” is a great album and one of Brian Wilson’s best solo efforts. It’s too soon to tell how well it will stand up over time, but I’m willing to bet it will still sound great in ten, twenty, etc. years.

How many different versions of “TLOS” did you purchase? Here’s a list of the different official versions by my count:

(1) Vinyl
(2) Standard CD
(3) Deluxe CD plus DVD
(4) Best Buy only CD version w/ bonus tracks
(5) Borders only CD version w/ stickers
(6) Digital download
(7) Full DVD

I purchased 1, 3, 4 and 7.

Emitt Rhodes: Hawthorne Bred, Hollywood Bound

“Love will stone you but you’ll come down.”

Although born in Illinois, EMITT RHODES was raised in HAWTHORNE, California and first made his musical mark there. Hawthorne is also the birthplace of the Beach Boys. Take a tour of Hawthorne with Beach Boys expert Domenic Priore.

HIP-O SELECT recently re-issued four Rhodes’ solo albums in a two-disc set. While I’ve seen his name mentioned in various articles, I never got around to checking out Rhodes’ music, until now. I purchased “The Emitt Rhodes Recordings (1969-1973)” this weekend and I’m still making my way through it. So far, it sounds amazing.

Sundazed Set To Release "Lost" Love Album

SUNDAZED “has unearthed an unissued 1971 album by revered Los Angeles rock band Arthur Lee & Love, languishing in the Columbia Records tape vault. And that's not all! We've also uncovered a marvelous batch of acoustic demos for the ‘71 album, featuring just the magical voice of Arthur Lee and his acoustic guitar. It's a thrilling twin-discovery of ultra-important material that no one knew existed!” To set up the album, Sundazed are releasing a 7" vinyl single with acoustic demos from '71.

Beach Boys - "Old Vibrations" (Goodfellas)

COLLECTORS MUSIC REVIEWS has a review of this 1 CD "silver" disc bootleg that features tracks from two different live performances: Washington DC on 11/19/67 and the Big Sur Folk Festival 10/3/70. Both shows have been booted before. Here's some of what the reviewer had to say: "For both casual listeners and passionate fans of the Beach Boys, these shows are certainly worth checking out. The studio versions of these songs have entered the American psyche and have risen to iconic status, hearing live versions is a treat. For those collectors who’ll play “Old Vibrations” and move on to seeking a representative live disc by other bands they enjoy, this disc is a fine entry point to live Beach Boys. For those fans who will hear this and seek additional live Beach Boys to scratch their itch, then those are the collectors who will want the Washington 1967 show complete, and they’ll have to seek it elsewhere…. or wait for a 'corrected' second printing of 'Old Vibrations' from Goodfellas."
