A Fine line between genius and madness

WASHINGTON POST “That's the impulse that drove Jeffrey A. Kottler, chair of the Department of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton, to take up the study of the human mind. ‘It wasn't until I became a psychologist and started listening to everyone else's troubles,’ he writes in Divine Madness, ‘that I learned I wasn't nearly as weird as I had ever imagined.’ Of his profiles of major artists, entertainers and writers of the 20th century, the most gripping -- those of Charles Mingus, Lenny Bruce, Vaslav Nijinsky and Brian Wilson -- succeed not because they break any new historical ground but because they get to the essence of madness, in all its horror and pathos.”

“Juke-Box Musicals” Prove Risky Ventures

FINANCIAL TIMES “As all producers know, for every Mamma Mia! that’s as settled in the West End as the pigeons on Nelson’s Column, there’s the long forgotten one-night stands. It seems unlikely for example that London will ever now see the Beach Boys musical that recently sank on Broadway, snatching cash and reputations with it. Such shows demonstrate that although producers need the confidence of putting their money on famous back catalogues, there’s no guarantee that confidence will be paid back.”

Beach Boys Associates Make A "Runaway"

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, THIRD ITEM Hickory residents Tom Martin and Bobby Bush Jr. helped to produce British recording artist and former Beach Boys member Adrian Baker's CD, "Runaway Tracks," released this month.

Martin met Baker when Martin worked and toured with the Beach Boys in 1990. In 2000, Baker asked Martin "to help him develop a Web site that pays tribute to present and past members of the Beach Boys' touring band (and) associates of the group over the past 45 years," Martin said.

Martin's current connection to Baker is as associate producer of Baker's CD. Promoting the collection and securing music publishing rights were no problem, but Martin needed help when it came to pressing the CD. He turned to businessman Bush, who had the technical knowledge and equipment to create a high-quality CD.

Martin said the CD has several songs written by Baker and a few cover songs. "In 1975, Baker had a top 10 hit on Britain's Music Week charts with a cover of the song `Sherry,' which he re-recorded for his collection," Martin said. "It is the top song requested at Baker's live shows."

"Runaway tracks" is availabe at ADRIAN BAKER PRODUCTIONS.

Legendary Beach Boy Founding Member Al Jardine Signs Exclusive Booking Agency Representation with Entourage Talent Associates, Ltd.

BUSINESSWIRE Famed rock and roll icon AL JARDINE, a founding member of The Beach Boys who has expanded his creative scope in recent years to include literary and film endeavors, is excited to announce that he has signed an exclusive booking agency deal with Entourage Talent Associates, Ltd.

Entourage Talent owner, principal and entrepreneur Wayne Forte has been a well-respected music industry veteran for over 30 years. "We are delighted to add someone of Al's stature to our growing and thriving roster of artists," he says. "As well as being an integral part of rock and roll history, he continues to be a vibrant performer, full of fresh and wonderful creative ideas which are taking him beyond the scope of the music business."

On the management side, Jardine is currently a key part of an exciting growing roster of clients at Los Angeles based Edge Management, which was formed in late 2005 as a merger between music industry veterans Jake Hooker and Diversified Entertainment Properties. Drawing upon their vast creative and financial resources, Edge is helping Jardine create a branding for his name that goes even beyond his status as a rock legend.

Jardine is currently creating an animated feature film based on his popular 2005 children's book "Sloop John B: A Pirate's Tale." He is also negotiating branding opportunities with various national lifestyle product companies. These endeavors draw upon his identity with his legendary band to create a branding presence for Jardine for a whole new generation.

In the area of promotions, Jardine recently teamed with MOPAR ("Motor/Parts"), The Cannery in Las Vegas and Fender Guitars for a branding campaign on behalf of the national automotive organization.

"We're really thrilled that Wayne Forte has decided to represent Al, as I have huge respect and admiration for Wayne, who has done so many wonderful things for his clients in the past," says Hooker.

Patton & Peeps Prep Production

BILLBOARD Mike Patton’s (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas) latest project, PEEPING TOM, will release its self-titled album on May 30 via Ipecac Records. Collaborators include Norah Jones (!?!), Kool Keith, Massive Attack, Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Amon Tobin, Dub Trio, Bebel Gilberto, Dos One and members of the Melvins.

"I don't know how many songs he recorded — an insane amount, like 30," Melvins drummer Dale Crover told Billboard.com. "There's a lot of layered vocals — like Beach Boys style. Some hip hop-y sort of beats. It's weird. It's drum machine mixed with live drums mixed with crazy samples, but then there's guitar and bass."

"I don't listen to the radio, but if I did, this is what I'd want it to sound like," Mike Patton said of the project, according to Billboard.com. "This is my version of pop music. In way, this is an exercise for me: taking all these things I've learned over the years and putting them into a pop format."
